When a paint job fails, the first instinct is almost always to blame the paint. Sometimes that is fair. Far more often it is not. A coating is the last layer applied in a long chain of decisions — what the surface was, how it was prepared, which primer went on, what the weather was doing that day, how long the painter waited between coats — and when something in that chain is wrong, the paint is simply where the evidence shows up.
That is the useful way to think about paint defects: not as random bad luck, but as symptoms. A blister tells you something different from a crack. Peeling that takes the primer with it tells a different story from peeling that leaves the primer behind. Chalking on one elevation and not another points somewhere specific. Learn to read those signs and you can fix the actual problem, rather than repainting over it and watching the same defect reappear in the same place a year later.

Four Root Causes Behind Almost Every Paint Failure
Dozens of defects have names, but they trace back to a very short list of causes. Identifying which one you are dealing with narrows the repair immediately.
Moisture. The single biggest cause of coating failure. Water arrives from behind the wall as seepage or rising damp, from above through a leaking slab or parapet, from inside as condensation, or from below as a substrate that was never allowed to dry before coating. Once moisture is under or inside the film, it pushes, dissolves, and lifts. Peeling, blistering, dark patching, efflorescence, and biological growth are all downstream of this one cause.
Poor adhesion. Paint sticks by mechanical grip and chemical bonding, and both need a clean, sound, correctly keyed surface. Dust, chalk, grease, polish residue, release agents on new concrete, or a glossy surface that was never abraded all prevent that bond forming. So does painting over old paint that is itself loose — the new coat can only be as sound as what is under it.
The wrong product or an incompatible system. Interior emulsion used outdoors. A rigid coating on a surface that flexes. A hard topcoat over a softer, older film. A solvent-based product applied over a coating it can lift. A primer that does not match the substrate. These failures often look mysterious because the workmanship was good — the specification was the problem.
Application and conditions. Coats applied too thickly or too thinly, recoating before the previous layer has dried, over-thinning to stretch coverage, spraying or rolling in direct sun, and working in high humidity or falling evening temperatures. These are the defects that appear within days rather than years.
Five Field Tests That Tell You What Went Wrong
Before deciding on any repair, spend twenty minutes gathering evidence. None of this needs specialist equipment.
The tape test. Press a strip of strong adhesive tape firmly onto the affected area and pull it off sharply. If paint flakes come away with the tape, adhesion has failed in that zone and the coating must be removed back to sound material. If nothing comes away, the film is bonded and your problem lies elsewhere.
The rub test. Press a dark, dry cloth against the surface and rub. A heavy powder deposit means the binder has broken down and the surface is chalking. This matters because nothing you apply over a chalky layer will bond properly until it is dealt with.
The layer test. Scrape a small area carefully and note which layer the failure occurred at. Paint lifting cleanly off the primer means the topcoat-to-primer bond failed. Paint and primer coming away together as a sheet means the primer never bonded to the substrate. Paint coming away with plaster attached means the plaster itself has debonded, and this is a repair job, not a painting one.
The moisture check. Tape a square of clear plastic sheet tightly to the wall on all four edges and leave it for a day or two. Condensation forming under the plastic means moisture is coming through the wall from behind. Condensation on the room side of the plastic means the moisture is in the air of the room, and the answer is ventilation rather than paint.
The pattern map. Step back and record where the defect appears. Is it only below a window, only on one elevation, only near a bathroom or kitchen wall, only along a downpipe route, only at skirting level, or spread evenly everywhere? A defect with a shape almost always has a physical source. A defect spread uniformly usually points to product, preparation, or application.
Peeling and Flaking
What you see: Sheets or flakes of coating lifting away from the surface, often starting at an edge, a corner, or the boundary of a repair.
Why it happens: The bond failed. The usual culprits are painting over a dusty, greasy, chalky, or damp surface; skipping primer on a porous or repaired area; coating a glossy surface that was never keyed; or moisture pushing the film off from behind. Peeling that starts consistently at edges and corners often indicates the coating was applied too thinly there, because films naturally thin at sharp geometry.
How to fix it: Scrape back every loose flake until you reach paint that will not lift under a blade — and resist the temptation to stop early, because any weak film you leave behind becomes the next failure point. Feather the edges of the sound paint by sanding so there is no visible step, wash away all dust and contamination, allow the surface to dry thoroughly, and prime the exposed area with a primer suited to that substrate. Then apply the topcoat in two proper coats. If the peeling was moisture-driven, fix the water source first or the repair will fail again in the same place.
Blistering and Bubbling
What you see: Raised bubbles under the paint film, from pinhead size to large domes. Break one open and the story is inside: bare substrate underneath means the lift went all the way down; paint or primer underneath means only the top layer released.
Why it happens: Something under the film expanded. Usually that is moisture in the substrate turning to vapour when the wall warms, but it can also be solvent trapped in a coat that was recoated too soon, or heat expanding air in a porous surface that was painted in strong sun.
How to fix it: Diagnosis first, always. Use the plastic-sheet test to establish whether moisture is coming through the wall. If it is, trace it — a leaking pipe, a failed parapet, blocked drainage, condensation from an unventilated bathroom — and repair that before touching the paint. Then cut out all blistered material, allow the wall to dry completely, prime, and recoat. Painting a wall while its source of moisture is still active is money spent twice.
Cracking, Crazing, and Alligatoring
What you see: Fine hairline crazing across the surface, deeper cracks running through the film, or a coarse pattern of interlocking cracks that resembles reptile skin.
Why it happens: The film has become too brittle or too thick to move with the surface underneath. Over-thick application, too many coats built up over decades, a hard topcoat over a softer old coating, recoating before the layer below had cured, or simple age and ultraviolet embrittlement all produce it. Cracks that run in straight lines or follow a structural path are not paint failures at all — those are movement cracks in the substrate telegraphing through.
How to fix it: Distinguish between the two situations. Film crazing is repaired by removing the cracked coating, sanding the area smooth and flush with the surrounding surface, priming, and recoating with a system that has some flexibility. Substrate cracks must be raked out to a proper profile, filled with an appropriate repair material, and allowed to cure before any coating goes on. Where a wall genuinely moves with daily temperature swings, a flexible or crack-bridging coating is the right specification rather than a harder one.
Chalking
What you see: A fine powder that comes off on your hand, often with the colour looking faded and washed out. Rain streaks running down the wall below a chalking area are a common giveaway on exteriors.
Why it happens: Ultraviolet radiation has broken down the binder holding the pigment in place, releasing it as loose powder. Every exterior coating chalks eventually; it happens far sooner with lower-grade products, with interior paint used outdoors, or where a coating was over-thinned so there was less binder on the wall to begin with.
How to fix it: Wash the surface thoroughly to remove as much loose powder as possible, then check again with the rub test. A residual chalky layer needs a penetrating primer that soaks in and binds it before any topcoat is applied. Painting straight over chalk is one of the most common causes of a repaint peeling within a year, because the new coat is effectively bonded to loose dust.
Fading and Uneven Colour Loss
What you see: The colour has lightened or shifted, usually unevenly — strongest on sun-facing elevations and around reflective surfaces, weaker under eaves and in shade.
Why it happens: Pigment chemistry meeting the Indian sun. Intense organic pigments — bright reds, vivid yellows, deeply saturated shades — are inherently less ultraviolet-stable than inorganic mineral pigments such as ochres, terracottas, greys, and off-whites. Fading is not usually a defect in workmanship; it is a consequence of colour selection.
How to fix it: There is no repair for faded pigment, only recoating. What matters is what you choose next. For fully exposed elevations, favour mineral tones and quality exterior products with genuine ultraviolet resistance, and reserve saturated deep shades for shaded areas, smaller accents, or places you are content to refresh more often. Repainting a sun-blasted west wall in the same fugitive colour simply restarts the clock.
Patchy Sheen and Flashing
What you see: The colour is uniform but the shine is not. Certain areas — typically over filled repairs, patched plaster, or joint lines — look duller or glossier than the surrounding wall, and the effect jumps out when light hits the wall at an angle.
Why it happens: Uneven absorption. Repaired and porous areas drink in more of the coating than the sound surrounding wall, so less binder stays at the surface and the sheen drops. Skipping primer over repairs is the classic cause. Touching up a wall with paint from a different batch, or applying the second coat before the first had properly dried, produces the same visual result.
How to fix it: Prime the whole wall so absorption is uniform, then apply two full coats across the entire elevation rather than spot-coating. Sheen differences almost never blend out with a third patch — the practical repair is to recoat corner to corner. Working from a single batch, or boxing several tins together into one container before starting, prevents the batch-variation version of this problem.
Lap Marks, Roller Marks, and Brush Marks
What you see: Visible bands or stripes where sections of work met, a framed effect around the edges of a wall, or ridged brush lines standing proud in the dried film.
Why it happens: The wet edge was lost. When a painter returns to an area that has already started to set, the overlap dries at a different film thickness and shows as a band. The picture-frame effect comes from cutting in the edges with a brush and then letting them dry before the roller reaches them. Brush ridges come from overworking a coating that has begun to set, or using a coating too thick to level.
How to fix it: Sand the ridges flush once fully cured, then recoat, working each wall corner to corner in one continuous session, keeping the roller rolling into fresh paint rather than back over drying paint, and rolling the field while the cut-in edges are still wet. In hot or breezy conditions, work smaller sections so the leading edge cannot skin over before you reach it.
Sagging, Runs, and Curtaining
What you see: Drips, teardrops, or curtain-like slumps in the film, usually on vertical surfaces, around trim, and at corners.
Why it happens: Too much material applied at once, over-thinning, holding a spray gun too close or moving it too slowly, or applying in cold conditions where the coating stays fluid far longer than expected.
How to fix it: If the paint is still wet, brush or roll the excess out immediately. If it has dried, wait for full cure — a sag is thick material and takes longer to harden than the surrounding film — then sand it flat and recoat. Prevention is simply two thinner coats instead of one heavy one, which is also what delivers better colour and protection.
Efflorescence and Salt Deposits
What you see: White, crystalline, powdery deposits pushing through the coating or forming on the surface, sometimes lifting the paint with them.
Why it happens: Water is moving through the masonry, dissolving salts within it, and depositing them at the surface as it evaporates. It is a moisture symptom wearing a different costume. Fresh cementitious work is especially prone, as is any wall with rising damp or persistent seepage.
How to fix it: Treat the water first — the salt is only the messenger. Remove the deposits mechanically once the wall is dry, allow a proper drying period, and use a primer suited to alkaline and salt-affected surfaces before recoating. Painting over active efflorescence guarantees the deposits will simply push through the new coat as well.
Algae, Fungus, and Mould
What you see: Green, black, or grey growth, usually on shaded elevations, north-facing walls, surfaces behind dense planting, around leaking pipes, and in poorly ventilated bathrooms.
Why it happens: Persistent surface moisture combined with low light and poor air movement. Growth is not just cosmetic — it holds water permanently against the wall and its root structures work into the film, opening pathways for further damage.
How to fix it: Treat the growth with an appropriate cleaning solution rather than dry-brushing it, which mostly spreads spores across the elevation. Then remove the underlying condition: cut vegetation back so the wall can dry and air can move, repair the leak, or improve ventilation indoors. Recoat with a product offering genuine resistance to biological growth. Cleaning alone, with the damp condition left in place, buys a season at most.
Stains Bleeding Through the New Coat
What you see: Brown, yellow, or rust-coloured marks appearing through fresh paint, often within hours, and returning stubbornly no matter how many coats you apply.
Why it happens: Something soluble in the substrate is migrating up into the wet film. Old water stains, tannins from timber, rust from nail heads or fixings, smoke and nicotine residue, and marker or crayon on interior walls all behave this way. Water-based paint reactivates them, so each new coat carries the stain a little further.
How to fix it: More topcoat will not solve it. Clean the area, treat any rusting fixings, and apply a proper stain-blocking primer over the affected patch to seal the contaminant in place. Only then recoat. This is one of the few paint problems where the correct primer, rather than the correct paint, is the entire solution.
Poor Hiding and Patchy Coverage
What you see: The previous colour, patch repairs, or roller edges still showing after what should have been enough coats.
Why it happens: Over-thinning is the most common reason — stretching paint beyond the recommended dilution reduces film thickness and hiding power proportionally. Beyond that: a dramatic colour change attempted without a suitable base coat, no primer over repairs so absorption varies, applying the second coat too soon, or simply trying to make one coat do the work of two.
How to fix it: Apply an even primer or base coat across the whole wall, respect the manufacturer thinning limits, and put on two full coats with the correct interval between them. Big colour changes — particularly to or from strong reds and yellows — are far easier over a tinted base coat than over the old shade.
Wrinkling, Slow Drying, and a Tacky Film
What you see: A skinned, rippled surface like a dried puddle, or a coating that stays soft and sticky long past the stated drying time.
Why it happens: The surface set before the material underneath could. That happens when a coat is applied too thickly, when the wall was hot from direct sun, when a second coat went on before the first had released its solvent, or when high humidity and low temperatures stall the curing chemistry. Contamination such as wax, oil, or silicone on the surface can also prevent proper drying.
How to fix it: Remove the affected film — a wrinkled or uncured layer cannot be rescued by coating over it — clean and prepare the surface, and reapply in thinner coats under suitable conditions, allowing the full recoat interval. On two-component systems, check the mixing ratio, since an incorrect proportion of hardener produces a film that never fully cures.
Blocking: Doors and Windows Sticking
What you see: Freshly painted doors, windows, or drawers stick to their frames, and opening them tears the film.
Why it happens: Two coated surfaces were pressed together before the paint had cured hard. Paint reaches touch-dry long before it reaches full hardness, and in humid weather that gap widens considerably.
How to fix it: Leave the item open and allow the full cure period before closing it — not just the touch-dry time. Where damage has already occurred, sand the torn area smooth and recoat. For doors and windows that see constant contact, a harder-curing enamel or polyurethane finish is a better specification than a soft interior emulsion.
Rust Breaking Through a Metal Finish
What you see: Orange-brown blooms or streaks appearing through paint on gates, grilles, railings, shutters, or fabricated steel, often starting at welds, edges, and fixing points.
Why it happens: Corrosion was never fully removed before coating, or no corrosion-resistant primer was used, or moisture reached the metal through a thin spot. Edges and welds fail first because coatings naturally thin there and because welds leave residues that resist adhesion.
How to fix it: Take the affected area back to clean, sound metal mechanically, remove all grease and residue, and apply a corrosion-resistant metal primer promptly — freshly cleaned steel starts oxidising again quickly. Then build the topcoat, paying deliberate attention to edges, welds, and fixings rather than treating them as an afterthought.
Problems Paint Cannot Fix
Some defects look like coating failures and are not. Recognising them saves a great deal of wasted effort and money.
- Active leaks from plumbing, terraces, parapets, or drainage — a plumbing or waterproofing repair, not a painting one.
- Rising damp at plinth level, which needs the damp-proofing detail addressed at source.
- Hollow or debonded plaster, which must be cut out and re-plastered before anything is applied over it.
- Structural or settlement cracks, which need proper assessment and repair rather than filler.
- Persistent condensation from unventilated bathrooms and kitchens, which is solved by extraction and air movement.
- Perforated, rusted-through metal, which needs mechanical repair or replacement.
In each of these cases a coating applied over the problem is not protection — it is a lid. The defect keeps developing underneath and reappears, usually having got worse in the meantime.
A Prevention Checklist That Avoids Most of This
- Find and fix the source of any moisture before opening a tin.
- Allow new plaster and cementitious repairs to cure properly, and prime for alkalinity.
- Wash off dust, chalk, grease, and growth, and never assume a surface is clean because it looks clean.
- Remove everything loose, then feather the edges so no step remains.
- Key glossy surfaces so the new coat has something to grip.
- Use a primer matched to the substrate, and prime the whole surface where repairs have been made.
- Seal stains with a stain-blocking primer rather than trying to bury them under topcoat.
